Poetry
Students will memorize and recite a poem appropriate for their level, a list of which is supplied to you on this website. Judges will have a copy of the poem, but students are responsible for bringing two judging forms with them. Native students must choose a Level 4 poem.
Please visit our resource center for a comprehensive download of all poetry, as well as the required judging forms.
Impromptu
Students will be given three topics to choose from. Once they have chosen a topic from the three, they will have 5 minutes to gather ideas. Students will begin speaking on that topic and an interactive dialog with judges will follow.
Please visit our resource center for the required impromptu judging forms.
Impromptu Level 1
In this level, students are expected to demonstrate a basic level of communication in German with usage of the present tense, modals, and time elements such as zuerst, dann, danach, zuletzt, wann, wo, wie, and oft. Some possible topics for conservation include:
- Describe members of your family, such as physical characteristics and likes/dislikes
- Describe your typical school day, such as your classes, teachers, and likes/dislikes

Impromptu Level 2
In this level, students are expected to demonstrate a more comprehensive level of communication in the German language with the usage of the conversational past, dependent word oder (weil, dass, usw.), and time elements. Some possible topics for conservation include:

- Describe your school life. How are your classes, grades, and teachers? What classes have you already taken, and what are some other things you have done? Do you have extracurricular activities?
- Describe what you do and have done in your free time. What are your favorite activities? Do you play sports or have other hobbies?
Impromptu Levels 3 & 4
In this level, students are expected to demonstrate a complex level of communication in the German language with the usage of the subjunctive and future tense, dependent word order, relative pronouns, and subordinating conjunctions. Some possible topics for conversation include:

- Describe your school life, as well as your college plans. What would you like to study and why? What is the importance of education? How does the U.S. educational system compare to Germany's?
- Describe how you spend your free time, including your favorite activities and any sports or other hobbies. What would you do if you had more free time?
